The South Carolina Grand Lodge has a long history in the Knights of Pythias.

HISTORY
1871 – 1930
The first Grand Lodge of South Carolina was instituted around 1871 with Palmetto Lodge #1, Charleston;
Damon Lodge #2, Florence; Myrtle Lodge #3, Columbia; Friendship Lodge # 4, Charleston; Germania Lodge #5, Charleston; and Stonewall Lodge # 6, Charleston; as Subordinate Lodges. Around 1872 there were 192 members, by 1875 there were only 38 members of the two remaining Lodges:
Myrtle Lodge #3, Columbia; and Stonewall Lodge #6, Charleston. November 15, 1875 Supreme Chancellor Davis revoked the Grand Lodge Charter.
Supreme Chancellor John Von Volkenburg issued a call to several Subordinate Lodges of South Carolina to send representatives to Charleston, S.C., June 29, 1886 to organize the Second Grand Lodge of South Carolina. The official roll call indicated the following:
Myrtle Lodge #3, Columbia, failed to send representatives, however, Brother W.B. McDaniel P.C., and Brother O.F. Howell P.C., being present from Myrtle Lodge #3, were recognized as representatives. Stonewall Lodge #6, Charleston, represented by Brother C.H. Bergman, and Brother H.A. Mullings.
Darlington Lodge #7, Darlington, represented by Brother C.K. Rogers, and Brother D.D. Evens.
Harmony Lodge #8, Florence, represented by Brother P.H. Walsh, and Brother M.D. Williams.
Carolina Lodge #9, Charleston, represented by brother C.F. Zernow. The Second grand Lodge of South Carolina was duly organized on June 29, 1886.
The First Annual Session of the Grand Lodge of South Carolina was held at Charleston, S.C.,
February 22nd and 23rd, 1887. In his report to Grand Lodge, Grand Chancellor C.M. Patrick indicated he had visited Myrtle Lodge #3 Columbia and found that this Lodge was working under a Charter issued by the First Grand Lodge, which was defunct since 1875. Myrtle Lodge #3 claimed that when the First Grand Lodge’s Charter was revoked in 1875, the Supreme Lodge recognized the Charter during the time of no Grand Lodge. Grand Chancellor Patrick also wrote to the Supreme Chancellor, Brother Howard Douglas, and informed him of the above action. Supreme Chancellor Douglas replied to Grand Chancellor Patrick, informing him that he endorsed the action taken and that no semi-annual no password should be communicated with Myrtle Lodge #3 until they had a legal Charter from the Grand Lodge of South Carolina.
The report at this session for the year 1886 for Myrtle Lodge #3 indicated 24 Pages, 22 Esquires,
80 Knights, one reinstatement, giving a total membership of 127. One suspended, and one deceased, given a total membership January 1887 of 125 members.
The Second Annual Convention was held at the Town Hall, Darlington, S.C., on February 21st and 22nd, 1888. Brother C.M. Patrick, Grand Chancellor, member of Stonewall Lodge #6, Charleston, presiding.
At this session, Grand Chancellor Patrick reported approving the By-Laws of Myrtle Lodge #3, Columbia, and several other Lodges.
Brother H.E. Bruce of Myrtle Lodge #3 was elected Grand Master at Arms for the next term.

The Third Annual Session of the Second Grand Lodge of South Carolina was held in the Castle Hall of Myrtle Lodge #3, Columbia, on February 19th and 20th, 1889, with Grand Chancellor H.T. Thompson of Darlington Lodge #7 presiding.
Membership of Myrtle Lodge #3 reported as of December 31, 1888: 1 initiated, one deceased, for a total of 132 members.
The Fourth Annual Session of the Grand Lodge of South Carolina was held in the Castle Hall in Charleston, S.C., on February 18th and 19th, 1890. Grand Chancellor H.C. Hughes of Carolina Lodge #9, Charleston presiding.
The election of officers was held on the second day of the session, and Brother H.E. Bruce of Myrtle Lodge #3, Columbia, was elected Grand Master at Arms.
Membership of Myrtle Lodge #3 reported as of December 31, 1889: 6 initiated, one withdraw, one suspended, and one deceased for a total of 146.
The Fifth Annual Convention of the Grand Lodge of South Carolina was held at Morgan Lodge #22, Castle Hall Spartanburg, S.C., on February 17th and 18th, 1890. Grand Chancellor W.E. James of Darlington Lodge #7 presiding.
Membership of Myrtle Lodge #3 reported as of December 31, 1890: 19 Past Chancellors, 129 Knights, 2 Pages, Total 150.
The Fifth Annual Convention of the Grand Lodge of South Carolina was held in Columbia, S.C., with Myrtle Lodge #3 and Capital Lodge #10 hosting. The building location is unknown. The Convention was held on February 16th and 17th, 1892. Grand Chancellor Altamont Moses of Gamecock Lodge #17 Sumter, S.C. presiding.
A dispensation was granted by Grand Chancellor to Myrtle Lodge #3 to issue a circular in regards to a Pythian Hall.

No Grand Lodge records are available for the years 1893 thru 1898.
The Thirteenth Annual Convention of the Grand Lodge of South Carolina was held in Florence, SC., on May 16th and 17th, 1899. Damon Lodge #2 of Florence, SC, was the host Lodge.
The Convention was called to order at 10:00 am with Grand Chancellor William Goldsmith Jr. of Blue Ridge Lodge #24 of Greenville, S.C. presiding.
Myrtle Lodge #3, Columbia, S.C., asked for and received a Dispensation from Grand Chancellor Goldsmith to receive membership applications and to confer ranks on members of Rhode Island U.S.V.I., as per Dispensation granted by the Grand Chancellor of Rhode Island. The following Brothers of Myrtle Lodge #3 were listed at this Convention (with Brothers of other Lodges) who enlisted during the war with Spain – Brother Wiley Jones, Brother Charles Newnham, and Brother J.K. Alaton-deceased.

The Eighteenth Annual Convention of the Grand Lodge of South Carolina was held at Greenville, SC, May 17th and 18th, 1904, in the U.S. Court House. Blue Ridge Lodge #24 and Rowena Lodge #72 of Greenville were hosts. The Convention was called to order at 10:00 AM by Grand Chancellor John M Knight of Gamecock Lodge #17, Sumter, S.C.
Dispensation was granted to Myrtle Lodge #3, Capitol Lodge #10, and Columbia Lodge #106 to use Officer Robes in a joint Memorial Service held May 1, 1904.

The Nineteenth Annual Convention of the Grand Lodge of South Carolina was held in Beaufort, SC May 16th and 17th, 1905. Beaufort Lodge #27 was the host Lodge. The Convention was called to order at 10:00 AM by Grand Chancellor James A. Summersett of Greenville, S.C. presiding.
Dispensation granted by the Grand Chancellor:
Myrtle Lodge #3 – November 11, 1904, and December 1, 1904, to confer ranks on a candidate over 50 years of age: December 16, 1904, to elect officers December 19 instead of December 26.

The Twenty–first Annual Convention of the Grand Lodge of South Carolina was held in Anderson, SC, May 28th and 29th, in the Court House in Anderson, S.C. Chiquola Lodge #32 hosting. The Convention was called to order at 10:00 AM by Grand Chancellor M. Rutledege Rivers of Carolina Lodge #9, Charleston, S.C.

The Twenty – third Annual Convention of the Grand Lodge of South Carolina was held in Charleston, S.C., May 25th and 26th, 1909 in the German Artillery Hall, in Charleston. Host Lodges – Stonewall Lodge # 6, Carolina Lodge #9, Calhoun Lodge 323 and Von Moltke Lodge # 66 all of Charleston.
The Convention was called to order at 10:00am by Grand Chancellor L.S. Mattison of Chiquola Lodge # 32, Anderson, S.C.
Myrtle Lodge #3, membership for the term ending December 31, 1908: Past Chancellors – 30 Knights – 224, Total 254.
It is to be noted that at this Convention it was reported that there were 642 Pythian in Columbia, S.C. and 189 Lodges with a Total of 12,377 members in South Carolina.

The Twenty – sixth Annual Convention of the Grand Lodge of South Carolina was held in Spartanburg, S.C., May 28th and 29th, in the Opera House in Spartanburg. Host Lodges - Morgan Lodge #22, Spartan Lodge #155, and Saxon Lodge #186, all of Spartanburg, S.C.
The Convention was called to order at 12:00 by Grand Chancellor Frank K. Myers of one of the Charleston Lodger, presiding.

The Twenty – seventh Annual Convention of the Grand Lodge of South Carolina was held in Aiken, S.C., May 27 and 28, 1910 in the Thestone Theater. Hosted by Aiken Lodge # 25.
The Convention was called to order at 1:00pm by Grand Chancellor Frank S. Evens of Greenwood Lodge #56, Greenwood, S.C. It was reported that 288 members were in attendance, suspensions 1,177
and members initiated 596.

The Convention was called to order at 11:00am by Grand Chancellor George W. Dick of Gamecock Lodge #17, Sumter, S.C. with 225 members attending.

The Twenty – ninth Annual Convention of the Grand Lodge of South Carolina was held in Orangeburg, S.C. in the County Court House, May 25 and 26, 1915. Host Lodge Orange Lodge #34, Orangeburg.
The Convention was called to order at 3:30pm by Grand Chancellor Henry K. Osborne of Spartanburg, S.C. presiding. It was reported that 292 members were attending this Convention, and a loss of 166 members as of December31, 1914, also nine charters were revoked at this Convention.

The Thirty - second Annual Convention of the Grand Lodge of South Carolina was held in Union, S.C. in the Convention Hall in the Edisonia Theater, May 22, and 23, 1917. The Convention was hosted by Cherokee lodge #37 of Union, S.C. The Convention was called to order by Grand Chancellor Alva M. Lumpkin of Columbia Lodge # 106, Columbia, S.C.
Included in the report of the Grand Chancellor to the Officers and Members of the Grand Lodge:
“We could have saved $2,000 to the Grand Lodge by calling off this Convention. This could not be done under the law. Your Grand Chancellor has, therefore, decided that the only proper way in which we could save and conserve funds this year would be by holding a one day session of the Grand Lodge. I beg this matter be taken up and passed at once, as the pay checks for the Representatives must be made.”

The Thirty - third Annual Convention of the Grand Lodge of South Carolina was held in the Convention Hall of the Jefferson Hotel, Columbia. S.C., May 28, 1918. Hosted by the Loges in Columbia, Honorable R.J. Blalock, Mayor of Columbia extended a most cordial welcome. Governor
R.I. Manning delivered an address of welcome as well as a stirring patriotic address. Honorable James A Summersett, Past Grand Chancellor, made an earnest appeal to the members to rally to the noble cause of Fraternity.

The Thirty - fourth Annual Convention of the Grand Lodge of South Carolina was held in the Convention Hall of Jefferson Hotel, Columbia, S.C., Tuesday May 27, 1919 at 10:00am. The Convention was hosted by the Lodges in Columbia, S.C. The Grand Lodge was called to order by Grand Chancellor Rev. Brother Louis J. Bristow of Columbia Lodge #106, Columbia, S.C.
The Grand Chancellor reported that due to the number of Brothers reporting to war it was impossible to procure a quorum for the Convention.
The Grand Lodge Journal of this Convention did not include any reports from Subordinate Lodges ending December 31, 1918.
The Thirty - fifth Annual Convention of the Grand Lodge of South Carolina was held in the Red Men’s Hall, Greenville, SC, Tuesday, May 25, 1920, at 2:30. The Convention was hosted by Blue Ridge Lodge # 24 and Rowena Lodge 3 72 of Greenville, SC.
The Grand Lodge Session was called to order by Grand Chancellor Col. O.J. Bond, of Charleston, SC, presiding.
Grand Representative attending the Convention from Myrtle Lodge #3: Brother J.M. Graham, W.F. Stieglitz, and C.A. Lynn.
Tuesday evening a selected team from Blue Ridge and Rowena Lodge conferred the Knight Rank in Amplified Form. The work was excellently done.
The Thirty – sixth Annual Convention of the Grand Lodge of South Carolina was held in the Community Hall, Greenwood, SC., Tuesday May 24, 1921, at 12:00. The Convention was hosted by Greenwood Lodge #56, Greenwood, SC.
Supreme Vice Chancellor Brother George C. Cadell, of Norfolk, Virginia, being present, was introduced, and he made brief remarks.
The Grand Lodge was called to order by Grand Chancellor Brother P.F. Henderson, of Aiken Lodge # 25, Aiken, SC, presiding. Grand Representative Brother J.A. Elkins from Myrtle Lodge #3 was in attendance as was Chancellor Commander Rev. James R. Walker with three other Brothers.
The Thirty – seventh Annual Convention of the Grand Lodge of South Carolina was held in the Ball Room of the Cleveland Hotel, Spartanburg, SC., Tuesday may 23, 1922. The Convention was hosted by Morgan Lodge # 22, Spartan Lodge # 155 and Saxon Lodge # 186, all of Spartanburg, SC.
The Grand Lodge was called to order by Grand Chancellor Brother Henry C. Tillman of Greenwood Lodge # 56, Greenwood, SC., presiding.
The Grand chancellor had the pleasure of meeting with Myrtle Lodge # 3, at Columbia, SC, upon the occasion of it’s Fiftieth Anniversary, and to present to Brother John A. Elkins a jewel of his Fifty year of active and useful service in this Order. It is not often in the history of any Grand Domain that there is an occasion of this kind; and this is the first time in our history that a Brother has lived so long in service. The Grand Chancellor recommends that this Grand Lodge pass a Resolution of Appreciation and Congratulation to Brother Elkins.
Report of the Grand Lodge Pythian Service Commission:
The Pythian Service Commission appointed at the last session of Grand Lodge begs to report that after a full consideration, a distinctive Pythian Building be constructed in which ample provision shall be 6
made for Grand Lodge Offices and a Castle Hall large enough to accommodate the Grand Lodge Convention.
We, therefore recommend:
1 That the Grand Lodge go on record as heartily favoring such a building, with the understanding that the Grand Lodge is not assume any financial obligation.
2 That the grand Lodge name at this meeting a Board of Corporators, who shall proceed at once, in conjunction with Representatives of the Columbia Lodges, to secure sufficient subscriptions to obtain a Charter, and with the understanding that in the said Charter there shall be a provision that the Grand Lodge shall be represented on the Board of Directors, by at least three men who the Grand Lodge shall name for such terms as it shall elect.
3 That permission be granted to the Corporation to appeal to the Subordinate Lodges and Membership of this Grand Domain to take stock in this enterprise and that no stock be sold outside the Order and Pythian Sisters membership. Upon a motion on the report, it was adopted.

The Thirty–eight Annual Convention of the Grand Lodge of South Carolina was held in the Court House, Aiken, SC, Tuesday, May 22, and Wednesday 23, 1923. Tea Convention was hosted by Aiken Lodge # 25, Aiken, SC. The Alternate Representative for Myrtle Lodge # 3 were Brother S.J. Fliter and S.M. Graham, also attending was Chancellor Commander J.W. Martin and Brother C.A. Lynn.
The Grand Lodge was called to order by Grand Chancellor Dr. J.C. Guilds, presiding. In his report to the Grand Lodge, he stated one of his greatest disappointments of the year is that we cannot report greater progress upon the Pythian Building, authorized by the last Grand Lodge. The Treasurer holds about $20,000 in subscriptions. This is not regarded as a sufficient sum for securing of a Charter of adequate capitalization.
It is the recommendation of the Grand Chancellor, that the S.C. Building Commission, be continued, with instructions to proceed as rapidly as possible. 7
The Thirty–ninth Annual Convention of the Grand Lodge of South Carolina was held in the American Legion Hall, Anderson, SC., at 12:00, Tuesday, May 27, 1924, and Wednesday 28. The Convention was hosted by Chiquola Lodge # 32 of Anderson, SC.
The Grand Lodge was called to order by Grand Chancellor Brother James H. Craig of Anderson, SC., presiding.
Myrtle Lodge #3, Columbia, SC. Hosted the 4th District Convention in Columbia, SC, on January 24, 1924. Although it was a bitterly cold day, it was a most enjoyable and beneficial occasion.
There has been no progress on the Pythian Building in Columbia during the year.

The Fortieth Annual Convention of the Grand Lodge of South Carolina was held in the Pythian Hall, Rock Hill, SC., Tuesday, May 26, 1925 and Wednesday the 27 at 10:00 am. The Convention was hosted by Oakland Lodge # 45, Rock Hill, SC. The Convention was hosted by Oakland Lodge #45, Rock Hill.
The Grand Lodge was called to order by Grand Chancellor Brother John M. Hemphill of Chester, SC. presiding.

The Grand Lodge was called to order by Grand Chancellor Hon. Ernest L. Allen of Aiken, SC. Presiding.

The Fortieth-second Annual Convention of the Grand Lodge of South Carolina was held in the Masonic Hall, Hartsville, SC., Tuesday, May 24 and 25, 1927. The Convention was hosted by Palmetto Lodge #11, Hartsville, SC.
The Grand Lodge was called to order by Grand Chancellor Jno. G. Dinkins, presiding.
The Grand Representatives for Myrtle Lodge # 3, Brothers J.A. Keels, C.A. Lynn, and J.F. Williams,
Chancellor Commander Brother F.W. Seegers, were all in attendance.
The report of Grand Chancellor Jno. Dinkins to the Grand Lodge included the following: The Domain of S.C. and our Pythian Membership were thrilled and delighted at the action of the Supreme Lodge last summer in elevating Honorable Brother Alvin M. Lumpkin to the high and responsible place of Supreme Vice Chancellor. He is the first S.C. Pythian to be elected to an office in the Supreme Lodge. Brother Lumpkin is a member of Columbia Lodge # 106.
In the report of District Deputy Grand Chancellor of the Fourth District to the Grand Lodge by R. M. McCulloch: Myrtle Lodge #3, lost all funds last July, when The American bank and Trust Company closed. Myrtle Lodge #3 missed several meetings during the last Grand Lodge year because of a lack of a Quorum.
The Fortieth-third Annual Convention of the Grand Lodge of South Carolina was held in the ball Room of the Jefferson Hotel, Columbia, SC., Tuesday, May 22, 1928. This Convention was hosted by Myrtle Lodge #3, Columbia Lodge #106, and Equality Lodge #109, all of Columbia, SC.
